“Goodbye Julia,” the first-ever Sudanese feature film to screen at the Cannes Film Festival, has been chosen by Sudan as its second-ever submission for the Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

Directed by Mohamed Kordofani, the film also received the Freedom Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

“Goodbye Julia” tells the story of Mona, a woman from Northern Sudan, seeking redemption after her husband kills a Southern Sudanese man.

She hires the man’s widow, Julia, as her maid, highlighting the complex relations between Northern and Southern Sudanese communities.

The film explores themes of racism, tradition, and transformation. Despite the challenges in Sudan, the director expressed gratitude for the film’s submission, hoping it will shed light on a different side of the country to the world.
